Happy New Year! A New Year is a chance to wipe the slate clean and start all over; or is it? In today’s society everything we do online is “out there” and will follow us for the rest of our lives and sometimes into the afterlife. (I know of two men who are widowed whose wives’ Facebook pages are still up. Legacy management will become a bigger part of personal brand management in the future.)
If you’re reading this blog post you may be wondering: Why do I need a personal brand? Let’s listen to personal brand guru Gary Vaynerchuk as he talks about the power of personal brand. I love his comments on “selling” and on the need to Google yourself. This video is well worth the four minutes it takes to listen.
If you’re an independent P.R. or Marketing Pro, be sure to join Amanda Littlejohn and me as we talk about the Power of Personal Branding at Solo PR Summit in Atlanta February 20th.

Mel,
Thanks for bringing this particular Gary video to my attention. More and more, it’s about the personal brand.
Sue
Sue, it’s great to have a “celebrity spokesman” like Gary V. reinforcing what I have been saying for years! Glad others are recognizing the importance of personal branding.
This is such an important topic – so much so we even have an online course about it at UQ Power called the UQ Personal Power Program.
People make their first impression online and offline in 6-7 seconds so you have to be the architect of your personal brand!
You are so right Heidi! The power of personal branding is so important, particularly in the online world in which we now live!
I like that he highlights the fact that everyone has a personal brand. Even though it may be a small one, you still have one so you need to make sure it conveys the message that you want to send.
Tiffany, I was just talking with a friend today about the importance of having a brand already created in case she gets laid off. Tough but true in today’s economic climate.
Your brand isn’t always what you want it to be, or what you think it is … it’s what the consumer perceives it to be … it’s what they think.
If you don’t take the time to define your brand, someone else will … the consumers will … and you may not always like what they have to say!
Right Jennifer! “Perception is reality.”
Great video. Happy New Year to you!
Great video. Happy New Year to you!
Glad you enjoyed that personal branding video and I wish you the very best in 2013 too!
Great video and to the point. People are going to check you out so you really need to have your “brand” in place.
Thanks for the personal branding comments Bill!
